SCOUTING REPORT

How they set up the car, and the style that emerged from it.

THE REPORT

Alonso's most technically distinguishing characteristic is his simultaneous steering and throttle coordination in oversteer conditions. Edd Straw described it in The Race as 'ludicrous', choosing the word deliberately: where most drivers process snap oversteer as a sequential event — steer to correct, then reapply throttle — Alonso applies both inputs in the same instant without the cognitive hierarchy that separates those actions for other drivers. His engineers at Renault, Ferrari, and Alpine have all noted that his oversteer corrections register on telemetry as effectively continuous with the apex phase rather than as discrete recovery events. At 44, the reflex speed for this coordination has not degraded measurably.

His race management is the most complete the sport has produced. The specific skill is simultaneous optimisation: tyre delta to the car ahead, fuel load evolution, weather probability weighting, and gap management — all processed in parallel across 60 laps without degradation in output quality. Ferrari technical staff who worked with him between 2010 and 2014 have consistently noted that his corner-by-corner description of car behaviour was precise enough to identify the required setup change without video review. This feedback loop, exploited at Renault in both stints, at Ferrari across five seasons, and at Alpine, is the development multiplier that made him worth more to those teams than his points total alone.

At 44 with Aston Martin in 2026, his Saturday qualifying ceiling is fractionally lower than his 2005 or 2012 peak — the edge over younger drivers has narrowed from a consistent advantage to a car-dependent one. On Sundays, the race management and engineering feedback remain at a level no current driver has matched. Alonso's presence in any team's driver room represents a development accelerator; the data he provides across a race weekend, in terms of driving precision and verbal engineering feedback, is not replicated by any other active driver in the sport.
