SCOUTING REPORT
How they set up the car, and the style that emerged from it.
THE REPORT
Bottas's driving style at Mercedes was characterised by exceptional smoothness through high-speed sequences — his sector data from high-speed circuits was internally cited as the reference benchmark against which the car's aerodynamic development was verified. The problem was that the W-series cars from 2019 onward were optimised around an aggressive, hard-entry technique in slow-speed corners: the W10, W11, and W12 were at their most competitive when driven with late braking and high rotation bias, a style Hamilton had developed and Bottas had not fully internalised. His natural smoothness was a strength in high-speed sections and a relative weakness in the hairpins and chicanes where Hamilton's aggression generated the most time.
This stylistic incompatibility produced a specific pattern: Bottas was competitive in high-speed sector times but conceded in the slower corners that Hamilton treated as trail-braking opportunities. It was not a talent deficit — the same smoothness that cost him at Mercedes became a genuine strength at Alfa Romeo, where the car's more compliant characteristics matched his inputs and he delivered consistent points from machinery that offered no top-five performance margin. His mechanical sympathy generated better tyre life than the Alfa should have provided, translating to more competitive race stints than his grid positions suggested.
At Cadillac from 2026, Bottas is the experienced half of a development pairing. His 238 race starts span two complete championship regulation cycles — the V8 era, the turbo-hybrid transition, and multiple aero changes — and the institutional knowledge that comes with this breadth is exactly what a new constructor needs. His technical communication quality, rated highly at Mercedes and Alfa Romeo, remains an asset that transcends lap time. Bottas at 36 is not chasing podiums; he is building a team.
