THE REPORT
Leclerc runs one of the most extreme rotation setups on the grid — Ferrari engineers in 2023 described the balance as very aggressive at corner entry, generating a front end that responds sharply to trail-braking input but punishes any misjudgement with snap oversteer at the moment weight transfers back. The trade-off is that his entry speed is measurably higher than teammates running more conservative balance: he trail-brakes deeper into corners, releases later, with the rear rotating to the apex angle rather than being steered there. When he described the 2023 Bahrain car as unpredictable under braking, he was accurate — but that unpredictability is structural to his setup choice, not a deficiency in the car.
His qualifying advantage over teammates has been measured across multiple seasons at 0.3–0.6 seconds on circuits where the rotation setup pays off — a gap that reflects not just raw pace but the ability to sustain concentration on a car at its handling limit for an entire timed lap. The 2019 Spa qualifying lap in the SF90, a car that had no business leading Mercedes in that session, and the 2022 F1-75's nine-pole run were both products of the same capacity to extract performance from a knife-edge front end under maximum pressure.
His race management has been reclassified unfairly. The 2022 strategic failures were as much Ferrari team calls as driver error, and from 2023 onward his Sunday consistency matched his Saturday pace. The 2024 Monaco win — home race, emotionally loaded, operationally perfect — completed the recalibration: Leclerc can control a race when the tools allow it. The extreme setup is not a character flaw; it is the consistent, deliberate choice of a driver who understands precisely where his margin lives.
