SCOUTING REPORT

How they set up the car, and the style that emerged from it.

THE REPORT

Pierre Waché described Perez's throttle application as Red Bull's cleanest by data — a reference to his ability to apply exit power with a gradient that eliminates wheel spin without relying on the traction control threshold where most drivers trigger intervention. This technique produces a specific tyre-loading profile on exit: even heat distribution across the rear compound, lower peak temperatures, extended operating range. Combined with a setup preference biased toward understeer — which reduces rear tyre scrub in the entry phase — the result is a car that is objectively slower over a single qualifying lap than Verstappen's but significantly more conservative on rear compounds across race distance.

His entry technique uses trailing-throttle deceleration rather than aggressive threshold braking — he scrubs speed gradually, maintaining rear stability at the cost of some time in acute braking zones. The trade-off is deliberate: in tyre-sensitive races with Pirelli compounds prone to graining, Perez's approach allowed him to extend stints by 10–15 laps beyond what rivals' strategy models predicted. His 2023 season — 9 wins, P2 WDC — was built entirely on this currency. At Baku and Monaco, where bumpy surfaces and low-grip tarmac amplify tyre temperature management quality, his advantage over the field was at its largest.

At Cadillac from 2026, the tyre-preservation skill is amplified in importance by the constructor's position: a new team's development cycle is shaped by data quality, and Perez's consistent, predictable driving style generates cleaner simulator-to-circuit correlation than a higher-aggression driver would. His commercial value to the Mexico-anchored Cadillac project is obvious; his technical value to the development programme is equally concrete. A new F1 team needs a driver whose inputs produce reproducible results — Perez's career data is one of the cleanest reproducibility records on the grid.
