SCOUTING REPORT

How they set up the car, and the style that emerged from it.

THE REPORT

Piastri and race engineer Tom Stallard have built one of the most productive driver-engineer partnerships on the current grid through a specific discipline: Piastri provides lap-by-lap car behaviour assessments before Stallard has reviewed any telemetry, and the two reports converge with a precision that McLaren's strategy team treats as more reliable than their model data. The practical effect is faster setup iteration — corners losing time are identified on the in-lap, addressed in a setup change, and tested on the out-lap rather than through the standard three-session analysis cycle.

His tyre management is the most technically sophisticated on the grid by the metric that matters most: stint extension without pace loss. In 2024, Piastri's tyres degraded at 1.5–2 seconds per lap less than Norris's on identical compounds at the same circuit, consistently enabling the longer stint that produced race wins from non-optimal track positions. The mechanism is his throttle application phase: his exit traces show a longer, more graduated rear-axle loading ramp than most drivers at his pace level, which reduces peak torque delivery and eliminates the micro-wheelspin that generates compound heat asymmetrically.

The one relative weakness is qualifying warm-up: Q1 and early Q2 laps consistently underperform the final hot lap by a margin larger than most front-runners, suggesting his technique requires the compound at operating temperature before the peak of his entry aggression is fully available. In races, this is irrelevant — by lap five his tyres are in their optimal window and stay there longer than any rival. Piastri is fastest precisely where it matters: lap 25 to lap 45.
