SCOUTING REPORT

How they set up the car, and the style that emerged from it.

THE REPORT

Tsunoda's technical profile is defined by high-aggression entry: his braking point is consistently among the latest on the grid in heavy-braking hairpins, and his trail-brake duration is short — he loads the front axle quickly and rotates the car fast, generating lap time from the entry phase but placing high thermal demands on the front compound early in the stint. Engineers who have worked with him at AlphaTauri and Racing Bulls describe his throttle application as notably smooth relative to his entry aggression — a useful counterbalance that preserves exit stability — but the front-loading pattern in the entry phase occasionally pushes tyre operating temperature beyond the optimal window, limiting his ability to extend stints.

His maturation across 2023–2025 is the most significant development story among the mid-grid drivers in that period. The early-season incident rate that characterised his 2021–2022 campaigns — multiple contact incidents in DRS trains and penalty grid drops — dropped measurably from 2023, replaced by a racecraft pattern that prioritised gap management over wheel-to-wheel challenges that couldn't be won on available pace. The raw speed was always present: Red Bull's decision to retain him at AlphaTauri/Racing Bulls rather than replace him with a junior was specifically predicated on the pace data, not the results.

As Racing Bulls' senior driver in 2026 alongside rookie Arvid Lindblad, the context shifts: he is now the reference driver against which new talent is measured. His previous four seasons were calibrated against experienced teammates — Gasly, Ricciardo, De Vries, Lawson; in 2026 he has the clearest reference role in his F1 career. His ability to develop the team's understanding of the car — communicating the specific corner-phase data that allows setup iteration — has not been fully tested in this capacity. It is the expected next stage of his development as a senior racing driver.
