SETUP & STYLE

SCOUTING REPORT

How they set up the car, and the style that emerged from it.

THE REPORT

Leclerc's 2017 F2 campaign arrived with clear technical intent: he ran a rotation-biased setup under Prema that maximised entry commitment at corners where the spec Dallara could be pointed rather than carried through. His braking technique — later than most of the field in heavy-braking hairpins — generated rotation from pedal release rather than additional steering input, preserving front tyre temperatures across stints where rivals were either pushing or conserving. The seven wins came predominantly from converting pole positions, reflecting a qualifying style that extracted the final tenth from a car set up to rotate on entry.

The standard he set in his only F2 season was unusual not just in results but in error rate. Leclerc made fewer incidents of his own initiation than any 2017 frontrunner — the aggression was channelled through technical inputs rather than through the wheel-to-wheel aggression that characterised others in the same field. In a spec chassis where setup differences are marginal, this behavioural precision compounds across a season: Artem Markelov and Antonio Fuoco both had the pace to challenge on individual weekends but neither sustained it consistently.

His race management was advanced for a first-year driver. He read tyre behaviour at a level that allowed him to manage stint length intelligently, and his restarts from safety cars were composed rather than aggressive — he converted leads without incident rather than defending positions under wheel-to-wheel pressure. The 2017 championship story was one of technical control and calm execution, which turned out to be entirely predictive of what followed at Ferrari.
