THE REPORT
Piastri's 2021 F2 title was the logical conclusion of a junior ladder that had already delivered F3 and F3 Asian Winter Series championships. What separated him from Prema's previous champions — Leclerc and Mick Schumacher — was the absence of any early-season adjustment phase. Leclerc had flashes of brilliance interrupted by incidents. Schumacher struggled before finding rhythm in 2021. Piastri arrived ready: his setup preference leaned toward a neutral balance that prioritised front-axle consistency over peak entry rotation, and from this base he delivered clean, fast laps from race one without the overpush that characterises drivers still calibrating a new category.
His tyre management across 2021 was the field's best by data. His entry technique — measured trail braking to a rotation angle that loaded both axles evenly — preserved the compound across stints in a way that allowed him to run 3–5 laps longer than most rivals on comparable tyre condition. This compounding advantage converted qualifying positions that were occasionally off pole into race victories built on strategic conversion from tyre delta. Piastri's fastest laps came in the final third of his stints, when rivals were pitting or fading.
The post-F2 contract dispute — choosing McLaren over the Alpine seat his contract nominally assigned him to — demonstrated the same clarity of reasoning that defined his driving style. He identified the better long-term outcome, held the position, and ended up at the team where he won the 2024 Constructors' Championship alongside Norris. That kind of analytical confidence, deployed off-track and on, is what makes him one of the grid's most complete performers.
